To explore the splendid buildings of the village of Llivia, and to switch from one country to another.
The legend of Lampegia and Munuza: At the time of the Arab Invasions in Spain, and more precisely in the autumn of 732, a Berber leader, Munuza, came to Cerdanya to lead the troops that occupied the Pyrenees. He settled in the castle of Llivia and fell in love with Lampegia, daughter of Eudes, Duke of Aquitaine. He was baptized and married Lampegia in secret. He returned to Llivia after making peace with the Franks and promising his help to the Christians. When Emir Abd-el-Raman learned of this, he started a large army against Munuza and ordered Zeian to bring back his head and take Llivia Castle. Munuza was surprised, the castle invested but Munuza and Lampegia escaped through a secret passage. But they were catched by Zeian. Munuza was beheaded and Lampegia, captured, ridden beside her husband's head. The Emir was impressed by the beauty of Lampegia and sent her as a gift to the harem of the great sultan of Damascus.
Departure: Church of Sant Julia of Estavar.
The village of Estavar is located at an altitude of approximately 1,218 metres and borders the Spanish enclave of Llívia. The village itself, with its old stones, is very pretty. But it is above all his church, dedicated to St Julien, that attracts attention. It contains interesting altarpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a beautiful 17th century Christ. From the point of view of heritage, Estavar also has two hamlets, Bajande and Rô. Bajande has a chapel, the St Barthélemy chapel, containing two 16th century quest dishes.
THAT' S WORTH A VISIT!
Llívia: If there is one place where we can let our imagination run wild, it is here. Let us mention Hercules, the mythical founder of Llívia. Imagine Hannibal's elephants, the Roman legions, Visigothic power, Arab incursions. Until the 15th century, when we crossed the Roman bridge, we were dominated by the castle of Llívia, the largest in the Pyrenees.
