At an altitude of 1,300 metres in the heart of the Pyrenees-Catalan Regional Natural Park, Saillagouse is a land of gastronomy, hiking and well-being through the hot natural waters in the area.
Rich with a past of more than ten centuries of history, it is an old village of potters and which had at the beginning of the last century a hosiery factory. From its past, there are still some old houses and the church of Sainte-Eugénie.
The Hamlets of Védrignans (where the GR 36 runs) and Rô have been attached to Saillagouse since 13 March 1822.
Departure: In front of the tourist office in Saillagouse, Place del Roser
THAT' S WORTH A VISIT!
The Black Virgin of Err: When you arrive in Err, you have the opportunity to visit a small chapel that houses a black virgin from the 12th century. Legend has it that it manifests its power over all kinds of calamities. In 1726, it put an end to an epidemic that decimated cattle. Since then, every 2nd July, the anniversary date, a sung procession has been organised through the streets of the old village.
The red lands of Saillagouse: Behind the village, you will see gullied lands composed of reddish silt, clay, shale debris, granite and sand. These lands, called "bad lands" by geologists, were shaped by the quaternary glaciers. These formations are fragile and are subject to erosion, which gradually destroys them. Thanks to these sediments, about fifteen potters were working in Saillagouse at the beginning of the 20th century.
